The Bechdel test

Gender is one of those issues that has been so shitted that it is difficult to know how to tackle. I came the other day across this test for films, which makes for a great start. Now it is unavoidable for me to mentally apply it to any film I watch (or quit watching).

It only has three questions:

1:Are there two or more female characters with names?

2:Do they talk to each other?

3:If they talk to each other, do they talk about something other than a man?

Here’s a nice video with juicy examples:

(Its original source was the great blog of the scriptwriter John August, check it out if you are into fiction writing).

Are things slowly changing? I’d like to think so.
