Gender is one of those issues that has been so shitted that it is difficult to know how to tackle. I came the other day across this test for films, which makes for a great start. Now it is unavoidable for me to mentally apply it to any film I watch (or quit watching).
It only has three questions:
1:Are there two or more female characters with names?
2:Do they talk to each other?
3:If they talk to each other, do they talk about something other than a man?
Here’s a nice video with juicy examples. (Its original source was the great blog of the scriptwriter John August, check it out if you are into fiction writing).
Are things slowly changing? I’d like to think so.
