“What the world needs is…” A common sentence, with probably 6,500,000,000 different endings, one for each of the inhabitants of this troubled world of us. I recently had a ‘gestalt’ of my personal answer, one of those moments in which you see the whole picture as a whole (snap!). Here it goes for what is worth.
Two possibilities are likely for Humanity in our current situation:
Possibility 1
We keep on prioritizing the “ego” stance: MY stuff, MY country, MY interests, MY time…
Implications: the others are regarded as the obstacle. We focus on differences, rather than in what makes us equal. As a result of fears, we try to take advantage of such differences (I can cheat you because I’m smarter, I can beat you up because I’m stronger, etc).
Results: differences increase. And any side measure we take to relieve the situation, will only be a patch, Like decorating barb wire with flowers. The fences are still there, call them what you want.
Possibility 2
We manage to reach a more ‘organic’ view of what being human means. Like cells inside a whole entity. Maybe it sounds too romantic, but, if many non-rational species have achieved it, and it works great, why can’t we?
Implications: we manage difference as wealth. To follow the body analogy, a brain cell does not despise a rectal cell only because it is dumber. And the rectal cell does not try to destroy the brain cell moved by envy or fear of its intelligence (it’s an extreme example: in any case, if you find a rectal cell, never tell her it is!
). Each one acknowledges and respects other people’s roles and skills, different as we are, and uses difference to try to be useful (I can teach you because I’m smarter, I can relieve your load or give you a lift because I’m stronger, etc).
Results: differences flourish. Things become creative. We protect each other. Globally. In minutes.
It doesn’t matter how long takes us to reach such a state of consciousness. Even if we only achieve it when 95% of the Earth has been turned into a desert, and climate looks definitely like mashed potatoes, and drinkable water is a rarity, and food a miracle for all of us, and diseases arise, even then, from that day on, we’ll be safe.
To me, that’s all there is.
What do you think could we do for humanity to become less individualistic and ego-centric? How could we make community stance become more standard? What do you think the world needs now?
